At OrbRom Center in Phnom Penh, every sensory support tool we use has a purpose—and one of the most beloved among our students is the weighted animal plush toy. Whether it’s a frog, lizard, or crocodile, these soft, cuddly tools do much more than provide comfort. They offer deep pressure input that helps children with autism, ADHD, and sensory processing difficulties regulate their emotions and stay focused during classroom activities.

How Weighted Toys Work
Weighted toys work on the same principle as weighted blankets—they provide deep pressure stimulation, which has a calming effect on the nervous system. This type of sensory input can help:
-
Reduce anxiety
-
Increase attention span
-
Improve body awareness
-
Promote emotional self-regulation
For children who are fidgety, anxious, or overstimulated, simply holding or hugging a weighted toy can help them return to a calm and ready-to-learn state.
When We Use Weighted Animals at OrbRom Center
Weighted animals are integrated into:
-
Circle time to support focus
-
Quiet corners or calm-down spaces
-
Transitions between activities, where anxiety often spikes
-
One-on-one therapy sessions to support grounding and sensory regulation
Because they’re familiar and fun, children often form positive associations with these tools. The added comfort of a “friend” who helps them feel better encourages emotional resilience and connection.
A Tool for Both Home and School
Parents are often surprised at how much of a difference a weighted toy can make. That’s why our therapists often recommend these tools for home use, especially during challenging routines like bedtime, travel, or homework time.
At OrbRom Center, we guide each child’s use of weighted sensory tools as part of their individualized support plan. Whether it’s a weighted lap pad, a blanket, or a plush crocodile, the goal is always the same: help each child feel safe, focused, and supported.
