Discovering the Need for Special Education
My journey began during my tenure as a third-grade teacher at one of Cambodia’s largest international schools. While working with an autistic student, I realized the complexities of such conditions and the pressing need for specialized educational strategies. This experience underscored the importance of formal training in special education to effectively identify disabilities and develop personalized interventions.
Advancing Expertise Abroad
To address this need, I pursued a Master’s degree in special education at Flinders University in Australia. This decision was driven by the scarcity of specialized programs in Cambodia. The knowledge and skills acquired abroad have been instrumental in shaping my approach to special education back home.
Establishing Special Education Cambodia (SEC)
Upon returning, I founded Special Education Cambodia (SEC), a platform aimed at disseminating knowledge and sharing information with parents and educators about children with various disabilities. SEC focuses on training teachers and parents interested in special education and offers free online and telephone counseling services. This initiative seeks to address prevalent misconceptions and provide accurate information to support children with special needs effectively.
Launching OrbRom Center
Building on the foundation laid by SEC, I established the OrbRom Center in Borey Peng Huoth, Boeung Snor. The center offers comprehensive services, including counseling and support for children with ADHD, dyslexia, developmental disabilities, and growth delays. Additionally, OrbRom Center provides training for teachers at international schools, assisting in creating personalized education plans and monitoring student progress.
Challenges and Aspirations
The journey has not been without challenges. Special education requires immense dedication and attention to each student’s unique needs, which can be both exhausting and rewarding. Looking ahead, I aspire to pursue a doctorate in psychology, focusing on disability studies. My goal is to raise awareness and foster collaboration between the community and the government to integrate special education into Cambodia’s state education system, aligning it with international standards.
