The Power of Sensory Rooms for Emotional Regulation and Focus

At OrbRom Center in Phnom Penh, one of our most effective therapeutic environments is also one of the most magical: the sensory room. Filled with calming lights, textures, and tools like bubble wands and fiber optics, our sensory room is designed to meet the unique sensory needs of children with autism, ADHD, and other developmental conditions.

This quiet, controlled space offers children the opportunity to self-regulate, calm their nervous systems, and prepare their brains and bodies for learning.

What Is a Sensory Room?

A sensory room is a specially designed space that provides controlled sensory input—including light, sound, texture, and movement. At OrbRom, our sensory room supports children who may be overstimulated or under-stimulated in a typical classroom environment.

Activities in the room may include:

• Bubble play for visual tracking and breath regulation

• Fiber optic lights to calm and focus the eyes

• Soft seating or mats for deep pressure and proprioceptive input

• Quiet music or nature sounds for auditory soothing

Sensory Integration and Emotional Regulation

Children with sensory processing issues often struggle to stay calm, focused, or engaged in busy classrooms. Sensory rooms provide a space where they can regulate before frustration builds up. These rooms also help teach children how to recognize their needs and use strategies for emotional self-regulation—key skills for long-term development.

Therapists at OrbRom Center use sensory rooms during both one-on-one and group sessions, as well as for transitions or emotional “cool down” periods.
