Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder that affects children and adults. It is characterized by symptoms such as inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. ADHD can cause significant problems in school, work, and relationships.

Symptoms

The symptoms of ADHD can vary from person to person. However, some common symptoms of ADHD in Cambodia include:

  • Inattention: Difficulty paying attention to details, making careless mistakes, difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play, not listening when spoken to directly, not following through on instructions, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, avoiding, disliking, or being reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort, losing things necessary for tasks or activities, being easily distracted by extraneous stimuli, being forgetful in daily activities.
  • Hyperactivity: Fidgeting or squirming in one’s seat, leaving one’s seat when remaining seated is expected, running or climbing in situations where it is inappropriate (e.g., in the classroom or workplace), difficulty playing or engaging in leisure activities quietly, being “on the go” or acting as if “driven by a motor”, talking excessively, blurting out answers before questions have been completed, difficulty waiting for one’s turn, interrupting or intruding on others.
  • Impulsivity: Acting without thinking, difficulty controlling one’s impulses, making careless decisions, engaging in risky activities without considering the consequences, talking without thinking, and interrupting others.

Diagnosis of ADHD

There is no single test for ADHD. Diagnosis is based on a child’s medical history, behavior, and performance in school or at work. A doctor or mental health professional will typically conduct a physical exam and ask questions about the child’s behavior. They may also ask parents or teachers to complete questionnaires about the child’s behavior.

Treatment for ADHD

There are a variety of treatment options available for ADHD. The most common treatment is medication. Medication can help to improve attention, focus, and impulse control. Other treatment options include therapy, lifestyle changes, and complementary and alternative medicine.
