Cambodia is taking important steps toward improving healthcare and rehabilitation services through stronger investment in Allied Health professions. Recently, University of Health Sciences collaborated with SingHealth to organize a major workshop focused on workforce development and long-term planning for Allied Health services in Cambodia.
OrbRom Center was honored to participate in this important event alongside healthcare professionals, researchers, government representatives, and international experts who share the same vision of building stronger support systems for individuals with communication, developmental, and rehabilitation needs.
What Are Allied Health Services?
Allied Health refers to healthcare professions that support diagnosis, therapy, rehabilitation, and overall patient wellbeing outside of traditional medicine and nursing. These professions include:
- Speech Therapy
- Occupational Therapy
- Physiotherapy
- Radiation Therapy
- Audiology
- Psychology
- Rehabilitation Services
In Cambodia, the demand for these services has increased significantly over the past several years. More families, schools, and healthcare providers are recognizing the importance of early intervention and specialized support for children and adults with developmental, communication, sensory, and physical challenges.
The Growing Need for Speech Therapy in Cambodia
One of the major focus areas discussed during the workshop was the development of Speech Therapy services in Cambodia. Speech Therapy plays a critical role in helping individuals improve communication, language development, social interaction, feeding skills, and speech clarity.
Many children in Cambodia currently require support for:
- Speech delay
- Autism Spectrum Disorder
- ADHD
- Language disorders
- Learning difficulties
- Social communication challenges
- Feeding and oral motor concerns
Despite the increasing need, Cambodia still faces a shortage of trained Speech Therapists and specialized intervention professionals. This creates challenges for families seeking quality services and schools trying to support students with additional learning needs.
The workshop highlighted the importance of building sustainable training programs and developing long-term workforce strategies to ensure future generations can access high-quality therapy and rehabilitation services locally.
Long-Term Vision for Healthcare and Education
According to the discussions shared during the event, the goal is to establish stronger educational pathways for Speech Therapy and Radiation Therapy programs in Cambodia by 2027, with the hope of training the first generation of professionals by 2029.
This represents a major step forward for Cambodia’s healthcare and education sectors.
As awareness of developmental and communication disorders grows, there is increasing demand for:
- Early childhood intervention
- Inclusive education
- School-based therapy support
- Family-centered intervention
- Multidisciplinary collaboration
Developing local professionals in Allied Health fields will help Cambodia provide more accessible, affordable, and culturally appropriate services for families across the country.
The Importance of International Collaboration
The collaboration between the University of Health Sciences and SingHealth demonstrates the value of international partnerships in healthcare development. By bringing together researchers, hospitals, universities, and intervention centers, Cambodia can accelerate professional training, research, and service quality.
During the workshop, experts from Singapore contributed valuable experience in:
- Healthcare workforce planning
- Clinical service development
- Research and data analysis
- Speech Therapy systems
- Rehabilitation service models
These discussions help create practical strategies that can be adapted to Cambodia’s unique healthcare landscape and growing needs.
