Preschool Staff Training for Safe and Consistent Student Support

Effective preschool staff training is essential for maintaining a safe, organized, and supportive learning environment. At OrbRom Center, Teacher Assistants recently participated in a practical training session covering preschool operations and policies, school security, and emergency procedures for fire and earthquake situations.

The session was led by Lotivio Lasco Maricel, a Special Education Teacher with 20 years of experience in the field. Her extensive classroom experience helped connect each policy to the daily responsibilities of staff working directly with young children and students with special needs.

Understanding Preschool Operations and Policies

Preschool operations involve much more than following a daily timetable. Teacher Assistants must understand arrival and dismissal procedures, classroom routines, supervision responsibilities, staff communication, student transitions, and incident reporting.

Clear procedures help staff respond consistently. When every team member understands who is responsible for each task, classrooms operate more smoothly and children receive predictable support.

This consistency is especially important for children who may experience difficulty with transitions, communication, sensory regulation, or unexpected changes. Within OrbRom’s preschool program, routines are used to help children feel secure while developing communication, independence, social participation, and school-readiness skills.

Security and Student Supervision

The training also reviewed security procedures and the responsibility of every staff member to remain aware of the children under their supervision.

Teacher Assistants must know who is authorized to collect a child, how to report an unfamiliar visitor, when to notify management, and how to respond if a child moves away from the assigned classroom or activity area. Staff should never assume that another person is supervising a student without clear communication.

Good security procedures are not intended to create fear. They create an environment in which staff understand what to observe, what action to take, and whom to contact when something appears unusual.

Fire and Earthquake Drill Preparation

Emergency drills are most effective when staff understand their individual responsibilities before an emergency occurs. During the training, the team reviewed how to respond to fire alarms and earthquake situations, support children during evacuation, check attendance, and move safely toward the designated assembly area.

Children with special needs may react differently to alarms, sudden movement, crowds, or changes in routine. Some may cover their ears, freeze, attempt to run, or have difficulty following verbal instructions. Staff therefore need to know each child’s support needs and use clear language, visual guidance, calm reassurance, and physical assistance when appropriate.

Preparing for these different responses helps staff protect children without increasing their distress.

Building a Prepared Preschool Team

Training is not a one-time activity. Policies must be reviewed regularly, particularly when new staff join, classroom arrangements change, or procedures are updated. Fire and earthquake drills also allow the team to identify practical problems, such as unclear roles, blocked routes, slow attendance checks, or children who require additional support.

Through ongoing preschool staff training, OrbRom Center strengthens staff accountability and improves the consistency of its daily practices. The goal is straightforward: every team member should understand their role and be prepared to protect and support every child during both normal preschool operations and unexpected emergencies.
